Thought Capital Blog

Thanks for paying my site a visit. Thought Capital Ventures is my personal business. It’s kind of my “home base” for the things that I like to get involved in.

I’m a creator who likes ideas. The tagline for Thought Capital is “Ideas. Encouraged”.

I believe that is where innovation starts. It is usually the twinkle in the eye of an individual that, over time, gets turned in to an idea that gets turned in to a business. Those businesses generate revenue, employ people, and change lives. These lives drive our economy and are critically important to all of us. Ideas should be encouraged.

Thought Capital is about monetising ideas.

But, in my view, the support structures are skewed to start-up businesses. That’s great and there are incubators, accelerators, co-work spaces and more. Fantastic! But what about the businesses that have been going for a while, achieved a level of success, employ a small team, and want to grow? Well, turns out there doesn’t seem to be the same levels of support. You’re on your own. Those are the businesses I want to help. Because it seems to me that if we could help those mid-range businesses grow by just 5-10% then we could make a massive impact on the wealth of the nation. These are the “Scale-Ups“.

I’ve created a set of tools to help the Scale-Ups over at www.businessbalancesheet.com. Check it out.

And my day job? Well it all started back in 2005 when I was a founder of a technology services business called 4impact.

4impact is based in my home town of Brisbane but now does business in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea. Additionally, we have a part of our team based in The Philippines. We employ over 200 people and I’m immensely proud of the team where our purpose is to “Put the Human in Technology”.

You can follow our work at www.4impact.com.

4impact has a fantastic executive team and I no longer have an operational role in the business. I’ve turned my attention to the board and learning about the value that can be established through a good governance process linked to the executive.

This is leading me to look at how I can provide Advisory and Governance services to private businesses looking to scale. I’m not a shiny consultant who’ll produce slick business plans. My value is working with you and asking questions. Helping you uncover and explore. As much as anything I’ll look to help you through my failures as I will any successes. I’ve got scars on my back and trodden your path. That experience is rare and I’d love to help you:

  • Encouraging Ideas
  • Scaling Ideas
  • Connecting Ideas to Capital

So my plan isn’t to post on this blog too regularly. I intend to use it to share things I come across that interest me and might interest you. I’d like to share commentary on issues that interest me both of a business and social nature.

This is Thought Capital. Welcome!
